Middle
School Computer Projects & Web Pages 2003
This
year the Middle School Computer Class participated in several
computer projects that used new skills, and/or reinforced old
ones. These projects were in addition to keyboarding drills and
practice, as well as basic application instruction.
If
I Had A Million Dollars:
Students
were given an imaginary budget of $1,000,000 (we just didn't have
it in the budget this year to give them a real allowance). They
cut out pictures of items they would like to buy. Each purchase
had to have reasoning and be realistic. A spreadsheet was used
to keep track of how much money was spent and how much was remaining
after each purchase using a check book register style tracking
system. After a period of time all "purchasing" was
suspended. Each student then gave a written description of the
project and the reasoning for their purchases, as well as an explanation
of how much money was spent and how much was left. The next step
was to create a report using presentation software which described
the project, the items they purchased and how much was spent.

Baseball:
Students created a spreadsheet that calculated a running total for
runs per inning, runs per batter, total runs and hits for the game,
batting averages for two teams. Each student decorated their own
score sheets for each team using graphics tools be creating images
and/or importing clip art.
Each
player tossed a die to determine what base they reached while "at
bat". A one was a single base hit, two a second, 3 a third,
4 a home run, 5 a fly out, 6 a strike out. As each play 'came to
bat' all of the students kept track of the players success at bat.
Skills
learned and/or reinforced:
- Spreadsheet,
using complex formulas, creating macros
- Graphic
design

Website
Design:
Students learned basic HTML coding to create several web pages,
and eventually their own website. This was achieved in several phases.
Their first web page was at the instructor's direction begining
with a simple out put of two lines of text, eventually containing
embedded images, email links, hyperlink to a second page and a simple
table.Students also modifed background color and text color and
size.
Their
second project was to follow outlined steps in creating a two page
project with specific guidelines and requirements, and that describe
the topic of their final web project.
The
third and final phase was to create a two - three page web page
that incorporated images, links, email links, tables, varying colors,
and navigation that allowed a visitor to get to any page from any
page. The final projects are below.
Skills
